Shiraz, Sirah and Cotes du Rhone are the best red wines to pair with a hot roast beef sandwich. These red wines contain a peppery element, which goes great with the beef, along with any horseradish or spicy mustard that may be on the sandwich. Deep fruit flavours of raspberry, strawberry, and plum hold up against the heavier flavours of the beef, while earthy flavours of smoke and spices mingle well with the sandwich. Malbec is also an excellent choice with a hot roast beef sandwich.
For a cold roast beef sandwich, where you are out on an excursion, such as a picnic, or out on the golf course, a Beaujolais Villages pairs up quite nicely. Beaujolais Villages is light in alcohol and flavour, meaning it won’t necessarily hold up to the roast beef, but it will keep you refreshed. I just love the way bread of the sandwich soaks up its delicious flavours of cherry and strawberry. If there are a mix of sandwiches, such as turkey, salmon, ham and cheese, or tuna, Beaujolais Villages will pair up nicely with those as well.
